JERVIS SECURES FIRST SCOTTISH POLICE TITLE AFTER PLAY OFF

Fraser Jervis (Lothian & Borders) won his first Scottish Police Golf Association championship when the 2005 Championships were held at Ladybank & Balbirnie Park Golf Clubs on 6th and 7th September 2005.

For the second successive year, the clampionship was decided by a 3 hole play off, after Jervis and John Anton (Tayside) tied on a total of 148.

Competitors enjoyed good weather throughout the championship, although a strengthening breeze on the second day, coupled with fast greens and hard ground conditions made scoring difficult.

In the play off for THE CHAMPIONSHIP, over the Ladybank course, Jervis held a one shot lead as the players approached the final play off hole, the 9th at Ladybank. With both players taking three to reach the green, it was Anton who had to putt first for par. Knowing that he required to hole, Anton gave his putt every chance, but missed and ran some distance past. Anton then missed the return, leaving Jervis with two putts for the title. Jervis made no mistake, and secured the Championship title.

The FIRST CLASS HANDICAP title was won for the host force by Gary Chrystal (Fife), an excellent nett 67, 4 under par, over Balbirnie Park being augmented by a 74, 3 over par, in the closing round at Ladybank, for a 141 total and the trophy by a margin of 4 shots.

The SECOND CLASS HANDICAP was won by S. Nicolson (Lothian & Borders) on 142, 2 strokes better than his closest challenger.

The LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP was a clean sweep for Strathclyde, Alison Gemmill and Linda Robertson taking 3rd and 2nd respectively, behind Carol Collins, whose 147 total was 3 clear of Robertson and 4 ahead of Gemmill.

The RETIRED OFFICERS competition was won by past Secretary and Honorary Member of the S.P.G.A., Peter Nevans (Strathclyde) who recorded an excellent nett 69 on the second day at ladybank, for a 2 round total of 145, which gave him the retired officers trophy by two strokes, and was also good enough to give him runners up spot in the first class event.

The CHIEF OFFICERS competition saw former Chief Constable, William Wilson taking the trophy with a nett score of 72 over Ladybank.

The COMMITTEE COMPETITION, played over Ladybank on the practice day, Monday 5th September, was won by Jim Stevenson (Strathclyde) with an excellent nett score of 66, 5 under par.

The SCRATCH TEAM COMPETITION was extremely close, Lothian & Borders team number 1 taking the trophy by virtue of the better 4th scores, after a tie with Tayside team number 1 on 462.

The HANDICAP TEAM COMPETITION was also won by Lothian & Borders, team number 3 returning a total of 446, to edge out Fife team number 1 by a single shot.

M. Smith (Lothian & Borders) merited a special award after recording a hole in one at the 7th hole at Balbirnie Park during the championship.

At the conclusion of the Championship, Peter M. Wilson, Chief Constable of the host force Fife Constabulary, and his wife attended the closing ceremony, and Mrs. Wilson presented prizes and trophies to the successful participants.

This will facilitate transfer to times in the draw, and alternative venues, within the appropriate handicap class.

Other changes of handicaps which do not affect the class players are competing in should, as usual, be notified on registration on the first day of the championship.

SPGA Annual General Meeting 2005

The annual general meeting of the Scottish Police Golf Association was held on Monday 28th march at Ladybank Golf Club, Fife, one of the venues for the 2005 Championship.

Paul Blackburn (Tayside) stood down after his 2 year tenure as President and Vice President Colin Brough (Tayside) was elected to the Presidency for the next two years.

Long serving Treasurer of the association, Alex Allardice (Strathclyde) was elected to the Vice Presidents position, with Jim Boyd (Strathclyde) taking on the post of Treasurer of the association.

Ian Scoular (Central) and Dougie McCarroll (Fife) remained in post as Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively.

With three vacancies on the Committee of management to be filled, 6 individuals were proposed and seconded for election. This necessitated a ballot, and as a result

Jimmy Stevenson (Strathclyde) , Norrie Black (Lothian & Borders) and Stuart Boyd (Strathclyde) were elected to the Committee Of Management, Stuart Boyd filling a 1 year vacancy and the other candidates being elected for a two year tenure.

Henry Anderson (Central) will once again represent The Association at Police Sport UK.

2004 CHAMPIONSHIP - Northern Constabulary

Secretary Ian Scoular (Central) gave a full run down on the 2004 championships, held at Inverness and Loch Ness golf clubs on 4th and 5th September 2004, and paid tribute to the local organisers, particularly Donnie Ross, Bob Grant and Ally MacBean for the manner in which the championship was organised.

2005 CHAMPIONSHIP - Fife Constabulary

Dougie McCarroll (Fife) gave an update on this years championship which will be held at :-

Ladybank and Balbirnie Park Golf Clubs
on Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th September 2005.
Practice day will be Monday 5th September.

Ladybank Golf Club was established in 1879, the architect of the first course being Old Tom Morris. Three holes were added to the original course in 1910, and a further 9 holes were added in 1961 to form the existing 18 hole layout.
A heathland course of Championship status, the relatively flat fairways set amongst heather, pine trees and silver birch provide a stiff challenge, with accuracy from the tee more important than length. Compact greens require accuracy with approach shots.
The quality of the course has established it as a regular final Open Championship qualifying venue, and indeed final qualifying returns to Ladybank in July 2005, for the Open Championship at nearby St. Andrews this year.
Honorary members of Ladybank include Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros, both winners of the Open Championship in Fife, at St. Andrews, and local girl Dale Reid, a stalwart of the Ladies European Tour and the Captain of the victorious 2000 European Solheim Cup team.

Balbirnie Park, situated near Glenrothes, is a relatively new course, built some 25 years ago, which has quilckly established itself as one of Fife's quality courses, having hosted a number of SPGA professional events.
Most of the holes on the course are tree lined and with undulating fairways, some blind holes and excellent greens, the competitors skills will be tested to the full.

The entry fee for the 2005 Championship was set at £ 75 per competitor.

2006 CHAMPIONSHIP - Lothian & Borders Police

Norrie Black (Lothian & Borders) reported that the 2006 championships will be held at

Cardrona and Peebles Golf Clubs
On Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th September 2006.
The official practice day will be Monday 4th September 2006.

2007 CHAMPIONSHIP - Strathclyde Police

Jim Thomson (Strathclyde) reported that initial negotiation were ongoing with a view to taking the 2007 championship to

Glasgow (Gailes) and Irvine (Bogside) Golf Clubs.
